  • If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, you should report your concern to Child and Family Services. You have a legal duty to report if you have reason to believe a child is at risk.

  • If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 right away.  
  • After contacting Child and Family Services, they will assess the situation and may provide support services, refer the family to community resources, or take further protective action.
  • When making a report, provide as much relevant information as possible, such as:
    • The child’s name, age, location, and any known details about their family or caregivers 
    • Whether there are immediate safety concerns for the child 
    • The nature of the suspected abuse or neglect (e.g., physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect) and any specific incidents or patterns observed 
    • Any statements made by the child, including what they told you and when 
    • Information about siblings or other children who may be at risk 
    • The child’s cultural identity, communication needs, and any known support people 
    • Your relationship to the child and how you became aware of the concern 
  • Write down what you observed or heard. You do not need to have all the facts to make a report—just share what you know
